The event that we all were waiting for is finally here: TDF 1/2001, completely renewed both in graphics and in editorial setup, according to the objectives fixed at November 2000!
If you look up into the night sky, since some weeks, you will see a new star. But it is not a star, it is an house in low orbit, at 370 km from the surface of the planet: it is the International Space Station, that explained its solar wings, and fired a light in the night of cosmos! That, for us, is also a cultural lamp, the first lamppost, ignited on a road to be whole constructed. Just in these days the Destiny module, targeted to scientific research, was brought up to the ISS by shuttle Atlantis, and assembled to the station from the astro-technicians Tom Jones and Bob Curbeam.
Nearly like an echo, here in Italy, an extraordinary political event took place: more than thousand Scientists and University Teachers took a public position, in defense of the scientific research freedom. It is finally a clear position, by the side of humans, in open opposition to the ecologist political line, aimed to impose the gag to the research and to “put the padlock to the brain”, as Rita Levi Montalcini correctly commented.
TDF subscribes to the Dulbecco-Regge Manifesto and supports the February 13th public demonstration in Rome.
See, at this purpose, our Press Release.
The demonstration of San Valentino's eve in Rome is an extraordinary political event, something like a 10,000 watt beacon that lights on in the cultural and ideological night of this country!
The proof of the above is the worrying and trying to prove that black is white and withe is black of _the_whole_ Italian political world: environment minister Pecoraro Scanio (greens) genuflects -- by words -- in front of prof. Levi Montalcini (and than he claims anyway the right to control any research), the DS (labour) practice the nth u-turn in the direction of the wind, mr. Berlusconi and mr. Casini (right wing), promise late golden gates to the research.
For years they, at government, hunged the research, decreasing the funds and making nothing to get a better use of the Union research funds; and, at the opposition, they never spent for research more than few usual words. The result is that the country of Galileo Galilei and Giacomo De Medici is the tail-lamp of the planetary scientific research. But they are ready to jump on the tiger's back, when it show itself! Shame, for all.
As we are saying since some times, the so-called poles are still focused on the industrial age, nowadays ended, and they can do nothing else than to be towed, faced to the social phenomena of the electronic age: it was never so clear as during these days!
As to the greens, and everyones that take higher the interest of the non-human rest of nature, I think that february 13th they realized to finally have a political antagonist by the side of mankind!
The thought current that showed itself the eve of San Valentino can give birth to an enormous new-humanist movement: around the political goal of the 8 x 1000 to the sceintific research we can do many. But it must be assured an organizational follow-up, and to make hay while the sun shines.
We should like, though within our limitations, to be of some help. In our small, we of TdF have something to contribute, of philosophic and ideological, and some no means international links. (TDF is still read more from foreign countries, most of all from USA and UK, than from Italy). Our full engagement for scientific and technological research is online, in all our articles from the very beginning of TdF, and everyone can see it.
Here I address all the supporters, and not only Italians, of the Science Freedom Movement: please consider the TdF web site and its forum (we can open a new dedicated one in five minutes) fully available for the movement!
It seems almost passed to second or third line, but for us, that worked a lot, even this is a relevant event: TDF 1/2001 is online, fully renewd both in graphics and in the editorial setup, according to the goals defined at the 2000 november seminar! The summary:
