Seven organizations sign the
Newsletter 1999 of the Greater Earth Initiative!
Technologies of the Frontier will hold a
seminar in may.
The ones which attentively follow us
probably already know about it, nevertheless we will summarize hereafter the main
activities that see us involved, both as Technologies of the Frontier and as promoters of
the Greater Earth Initiative.
- Participation to the International Symposium on
the Space Travel (ISST), in Bremen.
To such symposium, sponsorized by DASA, several members of Technologies of Frontier will
attend (A. Autino, Dr. M.C. Bernasconi, A. Bertetto), as well as mebers of the Greater
Earth Initiative (Patrick Collins, besides the already mentioned Autino). Collins is one
of the chairmen of the symposium, Bernasconi and Autino will present own papers (online in
other pages of TdF 2/99), while Bertetto will be present as an observer. The Greater Earth
initiative will take to Bremen some hundreds copies of the Newsletter 1999, which will be
used as a message to Space Community, marking so a political presence that we aim active
- Elaboration of a political programme for the
development of the Merchant Astronautics. Promoted by the Secretariat of the Greater Earth Initiative (of which
Autino is co-founder), since the 1998 IAF Congress of Melbourne, a discussion is going on,
targeted to the definition of a political programme. Few goals, simple and able to involve
in the discussion large parts of the civil society, and to bring to foreground the matter
of the human expansion into Space. A mini-congress, held via e-mail between december 1998
and january 1999, allowed to identify some shared priorities (the development of a
Political Agenda, the participation to the main international space congresses, the start
of a discussion on Laws, basic Freddoms and Human Rights in the age of the opening of the
Space Frontier). Sych discussion leaded to draw a common document, signed by the seven
organizations currently members of the Greater Earth Initiative. The Newsletter 1999, summarizing
the main points of our political programme, furthermore contains:
- An articulated appeal to various social
parts, for a general mobilization supporting such a program;
- An analysis of the planetary
political-economic situation and the basic requirements for an alternative political
- An abstract of the philosophical Graeter Earth Manifesto;
- The signatures of the seven organizations
and of the individuals promoting the GEI.
- Discussion on the 1979 Moon Treaty and on the Outer Space Treaty. To start a discussion on Laws, Laws, basic
Freddoms and Human Rights toward the globalization of the planetary economy and the
opening of the Space Frontier.
- Seminar of the Editorial Staff of Technologies
of the Frontier. TdF is preparing
a seminar, that should involve at least the italian language part of the editorial staff
(Michael Martin-Smith already communicated us his impossibility to come to Italy this
year). In the seminar we will take stock of the growth of the magazine, that sees a modest
but constant flow of subscriptions, and of some relevant ongoing projects. During the
seminar, scheduled for a next may weekend, we will give the welcome to some new entries,
and it will also be an opportunity to discuss by voice (and not only via e-mail) the
political themes listed above.
