Message Good evening.

Back to The Moon, onward to build Islands In The Sky, maybe if we are good, to Mars and Beyond.

We have an International Space Station up and orbiting but Science
Fiction has us building really big cities in space at positions of
gravitational balance like the Lunar L5 position, a point in the Moon's orbit equidistant from the Moon and Earth.

The L5 Society would build a city in space built around the ideas of
Professor Gerard K. O'Neill.
You can read about it at:

I have had the pleasure of helping judge papers submitted by students on
how to build such cities in space.

The 1985 book "TROJAN ORBIT" by Mack Reynolds and published after his
death with the help of Dean Ing, talks about the problems you could get
into while building a city in space, though very popular world wide, had
its problems. Poor planning, greed, and control by the family, makes
for a thought provocative story about how building something this big
can get out of control. The Russians wanting to build their own station
in the asteroid belt just adds to the complication.

I came across the old pocket book in a pile of books left from a room
vacate at work just as I was thinking about how would you go about
generating public interest in building a Lunar Base.

Scary how these books show up just around the corner when I have a
question.

Work at Ames has been good to me in providing material for contemplation.

Want to roast marshmallows around the campfire while I tell some stories?

SOMETHING IS WRONG AT ISLAND 1

Island One, the U.S.'s first space colony and symbol of an American
Renaissance, is in trouble. Low morale, shoddy workmanship, unexplained
malfunctions and avoidable accidents have become a way of life, and
nobody seems to know why.

Is it the Russians? Home-grown anti-technologists? Arabs afraid of
cheap solar power from Space- or something even more Sinister?

When the President ordered secret agent Peter Kopitz to find out what
was going on, Peter's first discovery is that the Soviets are indeed
involved.

His second is that they are not alone.

He will probably not live to make a third.
